EFRE Project – Biobased Products

The EFRE (European Regional Development Fund ) project is executed through a collaboration of the University of Bonn, Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, and Alanus Hochschule. The project manager is Professor Dr. Ralf Pude. Working in different subprojects are nine PhD students, supervised by seven Professors.
The aim of the project is the improvement of the research infrastructure between the three institutions through the development of biobased products along the threefold interconnected categories of packaging materials, building materials, and biozidic additives. Focusing on the latter, one of my goals is the production of biological substances as substitution for synthesized counterparts. Those substances can be essential oils or phenolics with light absorbing, antimicrobial, or antioxidative effects. For example, antimicrobials can reduce bacteria in food packaging and antioxidants can prevent color fading in building materials.
To reach this goal, the subproject ‘biozidic additives’ conducts screenings of different species, cultivars, and origins to find suitable plants for cultivation, extraction, and examination of the constituents´ effects. The focus of INRES institute in this project part is the cultivation of selected varieties as well as the improvement of cultivation concerning the yield of biomass and secondary metabolites.

Plants / Crops
  • The paulownia tree (Paulownia) is a popular medicinal plant in Asia whose leaves have antiradical, antioxidative, antimicrobial, and anticarcinogenic properties. Since Paulownia is cultivated for timber, these plantations could yield the secondary metabolites, responsible for the described effects, as by-products. The timber plantations are dominated mostly by hybrids due to their superior growth. With these hybrids a new plantation is established and growth parameters as well as profiles of the constituents are investigated. In case of hybrids it is known that one parent has a more dominant influence than the other, especially noticeably in growth characteristics. Since the influence could be true for secondary metabolites as well, the same examinations are conducted in the parental species for comparison.
  • Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is an old spice cultivar. Its essential oils contain thymol, a substance with antimicrobial potential. Optimizing steps in cultivation are taken in order to increase the yield in biomass and constituents respectively. In this context a long-time screening of cultivars started in 2017 to find a thyme cultivar with homogeneous and consistent production and challenges of fine seeds and weed pressure during crop establishment are also taken into account.
